Summary
"Break A Brick- Youth Against Social Exclusion " is a training course that took place in Tallinn, Estonia on 8-15th of November 2015. The training course gathered 27 participants from 8 European countries.
Each Organization sent youth workers, youth leaders and volunteers who work with young people and wanted to learn about or develop their skills, in order to promote and launch new quality projects under the framework of the Erasmus + Programme on the topic of social inclusion, to involve and inform the young people they are working with in their local environment.
The idea of this project started to meet a need expressed by youth workers who work in the field of social exclusion with young people. This project treated the phenomena of exclusion, as it is a matter of necessity related by the boost of social exclusion rate among young people in the European Countries, originated by insecurity in living standards, political and social isolation, feelings of estrangement and unhealthy lifestyles, and surge of unemployment rate among young people.
Another reason is as well the European landscape in which young people are in even more danger of suffering from additional material deprivation, social and emotional marginalization. With this training we aimed at increasing the skills and the background of youth workers, whom can offer opportunities to young people to prevent and to remedy the social exclusion.
Objectives:
-Exchange practices among youth workers from different countries on various aspects and perceptions of marginalization and inclusion, insights and values about youth work with marginalized groups
-Motivate and empower youth workers for active promotion of combating social exclusion in their activities by respecting values and principles of European youth work for inclusion and proposed solutions and recommendations for challenges in their project management and fundraising
- Provide the participants with concrete tools and methods to work on social inclusion
- Raise awareness about the importance of inclusion on local, national and European level
- Empower youth workers in understanding and using the new Erasmus PLUS programme for their youth work for inclusion and developing their skills for working with marginalized groups within the programme
-Develop new local and European projects for inclusion, that are aimed at raising young people's awareness of everyone’s responsibility in tackling poverty and marginalization as well as at promoting the inclusion of groups with fewer opportunities.
The Training course used non-formal education methodology, based on open and interactive approaches and directly aiming at creating a safe learning environment for the participants. The training started with ice – breaking games and exercises to facilitate the process of the participants in getting to know each other and stimulate them to adjust in the multicultural reality they worked in. The educative sessions have been organized in the form of exercises and workshops, making the participants learn from their own experience. When needed, especially when a new concept, term or issue was introduced, the trainers provided short theoretical background. Brainstorming and open discussions gave each participant the opportunity to express his/her ideas and opinions. Role-playing games enabled them to understand better other people’s points of view. At the end of each working day, every participant had the chance to express his/her opinion about the activities they had and to give suggestions for the next day. The project itself and especially the exercises focused on teamwork in all aspects of the training course.
Participants came back home with more skills, competences and knowledge, and with improved attitudes concerning mutual understanding, autonomy and communication skills, among others. Participant also returned home with more skills, competences and knowledge about project making process with focus on the use of Erasmus +. That gave capacity to participants to offer to young people more space to participate as active citizens of their community and of Europe.
The participants are the responsible to use the results and the working methods learned during the training course, to prevent social exclusion in the young people and spread the project’s objectives in their local community, trying to involve also political leaders.
